What’s Hoppin?

Springtime Flingtime

What’s Hoppin?

I know! Do you? What’s Hoppin’ at Basket Express and Roadrunner Florist is the Easter Bunny! Yes, I sent a text to a customer in Washington, DC this morning reminding him that I’m playing Easter Bunny for his 3 children and I needed more information about what his 11 year old son might like!

That’s CUSTOMIZATION at it’s best!

The answers didn’t surprise me!  Sports (Washington Nationals or Washington Wizards) or Sports! So I’m going to include Final Four goodies, too (we just hosted the most successful Final Four in history) and chocolates and bunnies!

Designing Easter baskets is fun.  It’s a great time to celebrate spring, and there are lots of things to do outside. Of course there’s the Cadbury Bunny and all of the “imitators”, the fun of coloring eggs, and the gathering of family and friends for great food and spirit.

If you’re thinking about a custom designed Easter Basket this year, then you’d better get a’hoppin’ because this bunny is getting pretty busy!

Here are a few choices that might bring a smile to your spring celebration!

St. Patrick’s Day 2017

St. Patrick’s Day 2017

What does St. Patrick’s Day 2017 mean to you?

St Patrick's Day Facebook cover

I thought I’d give you a little bit of St. Patrick’s Day history before asking what Friday the 17th is going to mean for you!  OMG, there’s so much information on Google that I hardly know where to start!

St. Patrick was the foremost patron saint of Ireland. In the 17th century the day of his death, March 17, was made an “official Christian feast day” and we’ve carried the tradition of wearin’ the green since then! Like so many holidays that began in with a religious tradition, in recent years, there has been criticism of Saint Patrick’s Day celebrations for having become too commercialized and for fostering negative stereotypes of the Irish. There’s quite a bit of history about him which you might find interesting at History of Saint Patrick.

Do you remember spending an afternoon in the sun looking for a 4-leaf clover (I did that in the grass in front of my house in Denver as a young girl…gee I still do it today as a not-so-young-girl!). After all,  what could be more lucky that a green shamrock?

Our customers help us celebrate by ordering gift baskets and flowers and plants for this fun day.

Here’s a picture of one of the gift baskets that I had the pleasure to design this year. Looks lucky doesn’t it?

And then there are the green plants!

I must editorialize here. You will forgive me, please, if I take a moment to tell you about something else that’s in March and that’s green.

What are YOUR plans for Friday the 17th? Are you going to be wearing green or watching basketball? Maybe both? Maybe you have your own special way of celebrating? We’d love to hear what that is!

Here’s sending you lucky wishes for your Green Holiday!

Happy Birthday to ME: My day of reflection

Today is December, 18, 2016, and it’s Happy Birthday to me!

62 years ago this evening I came into this world on a very cold night in Denver, Colorado. My mother remembers it as if it were yesterday, and she loves to tell the story that she had just seen the doctor and he was getting his coat on to leave the hospital when they called him back upstairs to deliver the baby. Of course I tell a different story, because I suggest they put her under (which they used to do in those days) and when she woke up 3 days later she had a baby!

Needless to say, in all these years I’ve had quite a life.  My childhood world revolved around school in Denver, following the footsteps of my parents and older brothers, religion, friends, family and the most wonderful collies. We had an incredible circle of protection, a large extended family, and learned a work ethic that I carry on to this day.

My dad served in the United States Navy in WWII and used his GIBill to study accounting. He and my mom ran a small CPA firm that eventually grew into one of the most well-respected firms in the city and carries on his name to this day. After he retired, he continued to work For Free for the District Court of Denver and he and my mom still live in their own apartment, on the 9th floor, in Cherry Creek. They will be celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary a month from now.

I was blessed to have 2 older brothers. Well, when I was young I certainly didn’t consider it much of a blessing! They were always picking on me, from the day my parents brought me home and they named me “Sister Baby” to the day my brother Gary passed away in January. But I was always their “Monkey” “Lil Sis” and “Tiner” (a name Gary gave me in honor of President Kennedy’s Bostonian Accent).  My brother Sheldon is now a retired attorney who is playing golf for a living (we’ll see how long that lasts!). He and his wife Lucy have raised a son in his own image: strong, powerful, philanthropic.

I have a beautiful daughter and a 4-year old granddaughter whom I hope to see today. Sharing this day with them will make it even more special. I have invited a few of my closest friends and family to brunch in a couple of hours, and it should be fun to get together and schmooze and talk about this year and dreams for the next.  Those of you who were not included in this invitation, please know that I anticipated you might be at church this morning and therefore unavailable to celebrate with me, but please know that I’m thinking about you as I write this.

It’s been quite a year for me. We lost my brother Gary in January and I’m still reeling. My 88 year old mother had knee replacement surgery this summer (they told her it’s a “young person’s surgery”) and she’s recovered so well they have released her from PT. The flower shop is thriving (thank you, Pamela) and the gift basket business is having a great holiday season.  We spent a few months enjoying the fiasco of a presidential election that will difficult to forget. I rescued a new puppy who has destroyed the carpeting in my living room (I will be replacing the flooring soon). I have been volunteering my singing voice in the choirs at Temple Beth El in Sun City and  the North Phoenix Baptist Church. I am crocheting plastic blankets for homeless Vets and trying to keep the businesses current on Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest while Pamela keeps me apprised of current events that she reads all over the Internet.

My mother always says Next Year will be a better one. I hope and pray she’s right for all of us. May this season bring you light. May you be blessed with health and happiness. May my birthday be the beginning of a new year filled with joy, blessings and peace.

Happy Birthday to me!

Love,
Tina

OMG!! Cinco De Mayo Story

Southwest gift basket

OMG! Cinco De Mayo Story!

Remember I told you there are 3 holidays happening right now?  Well, here’s a great story about the second one!!  Actually, it’s tongue and cheek, and I hope you’ll enjoy it!
Most people don’t know that back in 1912, Hellmann’s Mayonnaise (known as Best Foods on the West Coast) was manufactured in England. In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after its stop in New York. This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise ever delivered to Mexico. But as we know. the great ship did not make it to New York. The ship hit an iceberg and sank. and the cargo was forever lost. The people of Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise, and were eagerly awaiting its delivery. were disconsolate at the loss. Their anguish was so great, that they declared a National Day of Mourning which they still observe to this day:
The National Day of Mourning occurs each year on May 5th, and is
known of course as, Sinko de Mayo!
I just couldn’t resist, and I thank my friend Kenny Knaster for sending this to me!
Cinco de Mayo—or the fifth of May—commemorates the Mexican army’s 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War (1861-1867). We refer to it as Mexican Independence Day, and in Phoenix it’s a great day of celebration and parties.
Never mind that this year it happens to be 3 days before Mother’s Day and 5 days before Mexican Mother’s Day!
We love love love to celebrate holidays!
Here are a couple options for you! Fresh flowers (of course) and southwest gift baskets!

For many years I lived next door to a great doctor. I noticed that when he wasn’t working at his office he was at home studying and reading. I think we forget that medicine evolves and our doctors have to continuously keep up with their education, the diseases, treatments and medicines.

We sometimes forget how important our doctor is. He’s always here for us, and he knows what’s best for us. But sometimes we forget to thank her and tell her how much we appreciate all of the time, work, education and dedication.

Wednesday, March 30, 2016 is set aside as a day to say Thank You.  If your doctor is helpful in any way, for you or you family, let us design and deliver a Thank You Thought from you.

You’ll be a hero, and there’s nothing wrong with that!

Choose from our large selection of goodie baskets from Basket Express or sensational fresh flowers from Roadrunner Florist.  You’ll be glad you did!

Tina’s Tidbits and Tales

Autumn cube of flowers

We’re changing the way our blog and email looks. Effective TODAY. What do you think of the new look?

Tina’s Tidbits and Tales seems to be a great title for me. After all, I send all kinds of information to you, some of which has to do with business, some has to do with things happening in the world, in life, occasions on the calendar, whatever strikes my fancy. Sometimes I even tell you which holidays are coming up.  (Those would be Boss’s Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and yes, Christmas!)

It’s the first week of October and that means it’s time to think about fall. What are your favorite memories of fall?

Did you like to rake the leaves and then jump into the pile?

Jumping into fall leaves

Maybe you remember going out to the pumpkin patch to choose the very best pumpkin!

Pumpkin patch

Whatever your memories, this is a great time of year!

You can liven up someone’s autumn day by sending a terrific veggie gift basket or a great sunshinny cube of autumn flowers.

Top of the Line Vegie Basket  Autumn cube of flowers

We hope you’ll enjoy reading Tina’s Tales and Tidbits: ’cause you never know what you’re going to find here!

Wisdom From a Friend

If you will take the time to read these, I promise you’ll come away with an elighted perspective.  The subjects covered affect us all on a daily basis: they’re written by Andy Rooney, a man who had the gift of saying so much with so few words.

Enjoy……

I’ve learned …. the best classroom in the world is at the feet of an elderly person.

I’ve learned ….That when you’re in love, it shows.

I’ve learned ….That just one person saying to me, ‘You’ve made my day!’ makes my day.

I’ve learned ….That having a child fall asleep in your arms is one of the most peaceful feelings in the world.

I’ve learned ….That being KIND is more important than being right.

I’ve learned ….That you should never say no to a gift from a child.

I’ve learned ….That I can always pray for someone when I don’t have the strength to help him in some other way.

I’ve learned ….That no matter how serious your life requires you to be, everyone needs a friend to act goofy with.

I’ve learned ….That sometimes all a person needs is a hand to hold and a heart to understand.

I’ve learned ….That simple walks with my father around the block on summer nights when I was a child did wonders for me as an adult.

I’ve learned ….That life is like a roll of toilet paper. The closer it gets to the end, the faster it goes.

I’ve learned ….That we should be glad God doesn’t give us everything we ask for.

I’ve learned ….That money doesn’t buy class.

I’ve learned ….That it’s those small daily happenings that make life so spectacular.

I’ve learned ….That under every one’s hard shell is someone who wants to be appreciated and loved.

I’ve learned ….That to ignore the facts does not change the facts.

I’ve learned ….That when you plan to get even with someone, you are only letting that person continue to hurt you.
I’ve learned ….That love, not time, heals all wounds.

I’ve learned ….That the easiest way for me to grow as a person is to surround myself with people smarter than I am.

I’ve learned ….That everyone you meet deserves to be greeted with a smile.

I’ve learned ….That no one is perfect until you fall in love with them.

I’ve learned …That life is tough, but I’m tougher.

I’ve learned ….That opportunities are never lost; someone will take the ones you miss.

I’ve learned ….That when you harbor bitterness, happiness will dock elsewhere.

I’ve learned ….That I wish I could have told my Dad that I love him one more time before he passed away.

I’ve learned ….That one should keep his words both soft and tender, because tomorrow he may have to eat them.

I’ve learned …That a smile is an inexpensive way to improve your looks.

I’ve learned ….That when your newly born grandchild holds your little finger in his little fist, that you’re hooked for life.

I’ve learned ….That everyone wants to live on top of the mountain, but all the happiness and growth occurs while you’re climbing it.

I’ve learned ….That the less time I have to work with, the more things I get done.

To all of you….we’re glad you are our friends!

It’s National Friendship Week.  Show your friends how much you care.  Send this to ‘everyone’ you consider a FRIEND.

Arizona State University SunDevils

ASU Snack Gift Basket

The Arizona State University SunDevils

begin their 2015-2016 football season this Saturday at Texas A&M and then return to Tempe for their first home game of the season against CalPoly on September 12.

If you’re an ASU fan, student, neighbor, alumni, then you know what it’s like to experience game day in Sun Devil Stadium.

For some of us, it’s been years (gee, do I want to admit how many years?) since attending a college football game as a student. (OK, I’ll admit it, I attended UofA games in Tucson, but please don’t tell anywhere up here!). And of course Pamela attended Michigan State University games in East Lansing, MI.

There is nothing like a college football game. As much as I love the Denver Broncos, there’s something special in the air when it’s a college game.  The fans never sit down! The noise never stops! The band plays all the time! The fun is never-ending!

Did you know I sang the National Anthem on the 50 yard line when the  Iowa State Hawkeyes and Pittsburgh Panthers played at the Insight.com Bowl Game January 1, 2001?  What a joy that was!! Pamela played the clarinet in the Play It Again Band and we had a blast! Then we enjoyed the game and it didn’t even matter to us which team won!

What does all of this have to do with ASU? Well, I’m excited to tell you!

Basket Express is the EXCLUSIVE GIFT BASKET COMPANY for Arizona State University!

Basket Express | Phoenix, AZ

Yes, you read that right!! ASU has a new app (ASUDeals) which is open to everyone (that’s YOU).  There you’ll find lots of goodies, like restaurants, hair cuts, pizza, and BASKET EXPRESS!

That means there are discounts and offerings! Right now I’m offering a discount on an ASU Spirit & Snack Basket.
