I thought it might be fun to write about the Flowers of the Month!

Let’s start with JANUARY.

First, a little history.

Birth month flowers refer to certain species that are associated with each month of the year. It is said that the characteristics of each flower will pass down to the people who are born that month. You can also see them mentioned as “flowers by month” but they refer to the same thing.

The Origins of the Flowers by Month

Culturally speaking, it is important to see what flower to choose for a gift, depending on its characteristics (such as color, appearance or scent). But how did we get to offering flowers on birthdays? People think that the Romans were the first ones to use flowers to celebrate such events. They had seasonal flowers which were more than mere decorations since they offered them as gifts for people’s birthdays. As such, most likely this is how birth month flowers appeared. But let’s see what flowers fit each month!

January – Snowdrop, Carnation

Carnation mini carnations  Snowdrop

The birth flowers in January are the snowdrop and the carnation. The carnation is a flower that comes together with various meanings, depending on its color. For example, a pink carnation represents affection, while a red one means love. White represents purity (of love). The carnation, scientifically known as Dianthus caryophyllus, is a historically rich and meaningful flower choice. With its scientific name dianthus roughly translating to “flower of love” or “flower of the gods”, depending on the source, this flower is one that has been revered for centuries.

The carnation is fragrant and long-lasting. The less color (aka white, yellow and pink) the more fragrance. White carnations smell like peppermint! In the heat of the desert, we know carnations are the longest lasting flowers, even though they might not be your favorite. They are grown in hues of the rainbow and can be designed to highlight or accent other flowers in a beautiful floral arrangement. We know people who prefer “all carnations” of either all one color or mixed colors, too.

Mini carnations are a cluster of small carnations grown on one stem.  They open a few at a time, into a small perfect carnation.

festival of carnations Carnation spray Multi-colored carnations

lotsa carnations carnations for cheryl perfect carnations

Carnations are considered good luck for a newborn baby! We can customize a gift basket to add fresh carnations for good luck!

Meanwhile, the snowdrop was thought to bring bad luck, since it always grew in graveyards. However, nowadays people think it means beauty and hope.

Snowdrop flower bulbs (Galanthus) are grown in both cold winter regions and moderate winters, but keep in mind they truly dislike warm winters. So, if you live in Southern California, Florida or other hot climates, you will have to pass on having the snowdrop flower in your garden. Information about Snowdrops Bulbs Snowdrop flower bulbs are small bulbs that are often sold “in the green” or undried. They can very easily dry out, so they won’t be happy sitting around for weeks on end waiting for you get around to planting them. You will want to purchase your snowdrop bulbs and plant them immediately after you receive them.

If you’re fortunate to be a January baby, then remember the beautiful Carnation and it’s amazing fragrance. May the long-lasting life of the flower shed its joys on you as you celebrate your January birthday!

What do you Fancy?

What do you Fancy?

YOU, yourself and YOU, what do you fancy? We’re sending emails and posts and, for some reason, you don’t seem interested in what we have to say.  It’s surprising to us, really, because we are a real, local, fragrant flower shop and gift basket store and we try to send information that we think will appeal to you.

But we seem to be failing…   failing

So, what topics would appeal to you? What would compel you to read from the top to the bottom, to look at the pictures, to enjoy the antidotes and to “click” and make the Internet “magic” work for you?

Fancy Internet magic

We’ve told you the differences between us and a floral order-gather 1800flower type of guy (you know, the one sitting behind a computer who doesn’t have a clue about flowers) or the flowers shipped in a box. We’ve shared with you the problems people have when they order on-line and the flowers don’t show up, or when they order from a Big Box Store and the flowers never arrive.

in a box

We’ve told you about the importance of seasonal flowers, vibrancy, life expectancy and safety. We’ve told you that we don’t design floral arrangements until they are ready to leave our shop, insuring the freshest quality possible.

We’ve told you when it’s appropriate to send flowers or gift baskets (like sending fresh fruit to a grieving family). We’ve told you we drop everything (and I mean everything) to get flowers to Hospice.

Yummy Fresh Fruit Basket

We’ve told you about Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas, and how important it is that you order early so the delivery can be made in a timely manner.

Halloween Gift Basket Cornucopia snacks for christmas Christmas centerpiece

We’ve told you about Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day and pleaded with you not to wait until the last minute to think about mom and your loved one!

Order early

We’ve told you about ourselves (Pamela, the graduate of Michigan State University Floriculture) and me, the published gift basket designer).

We’ve told you about the times we have cried when we learn about a loss and the times we have cheered for a new job and a new baby. We share in your life as you share in ours.

We’ve even shown you pictures of people who have come into our shop to pick up flowers (and that could be YOU).

Happy Man Annie Amanda Gabriel Jim

Troy and fancy roses Flagstaff friend Anthony Christine Nick

We’ve told you about plants and how to care for them. We’ve told you about our home sports teams and offered to design gift baskets for your favorite team.

Football Gift Basket  Denver Broncos Baseball  Baseball gift basket

We’ve told you about the  designs on our website and how we choose them, and how we custom design each and every item just for you!

What else can we do to please you?

We would LOVE to hear from you!

St. Patrick’s Day 2017

St. Patrick's Day gift basket

St. Patrick’s Day 2017

What does St. Patrick’s Day 2017 mean to you?

St Patrick's Day Facebook cover

I thought I’d give you a little bit of St. Patrick’s Day history before asking what Friday the 17th is going to mean for you!  OMG, there’s so much information on Google that I hardly know where to start!

St. Patrick was the foremost patron saint of Ireland. In the 17th century the day of his death, March 17, was made an “official Christian feast day” and we’ve carried the tradition of wearin’ the green since then! Like so many holidays that began in with a religious tradition, in recent years, there has been criticism of Saint Patrick’s Day celebrations for having become too commercialized and for fostering negative stereotypes of the Irish. There’s quite a bit of history about him which you might find interesting at History of Saint Patrick.

Do you remember spending an afternoon in the sun looking for a 4-leaf clover (I did that in the grass in front of my house in Denver as a young girl…gee I still do it today as a not-so-young-girl!). After all,  what could be more lucky that a green shamrock?

Our customers help us celebrate by ordering gift baskets and flowers and plants for this fun day.

Here’s a picture of one of the gift baskets that I had the pleasure to design this year. Looks lucky doesn’t it?

And then there are green flowers!

And then there are the green plants!

I must editorialize here. You will forgive me, please, if I take a moment to tell you about something else that’s in March and that’s green.

What are YOUR plans for Friday the 17th? Are you going to be wearing green or watching basketball? Maybe both? Maybe you have your own special way of celebrating? We’d love to hear what that is!

Here’s sending you lucky wishes for your Green Holiday!

Happy Birthday to ME: My day of reflection

Today is December, 18, 2016, and it’s Happy Birthday to me!

62 years ago this evening I came into this world on a very cold night in Denver, Colorado. My mother remembers it as if it were yesterday, and she loves to tell the story that she had just seen the doctor and he was getting his coat on to leave the hospital when they called him back upstairs to deliver the baby. Of course I tell a different story, because I suggest they put her under (which they used to do in those days) and when she woke up 3 days later she had a baby!

Needless to say, in all these years I’ve had quite a life.  My childhood world revolved around school in Denver, following the footsteps of my parents and older brothers, religion, friends, family and the most wonderful collies. We had an incredible circle of protection, a large extended family, and learned a work ethic that I carry on to this day.

My dad served in the United States Navy in WWII and used his GIBill to study accounting. He and my mom ran a small CPA firm that eventually grew into one of the most well-respected firms in the city and carries on his name to this day. After he retired, he continued to work For Free for the District Court of Denver and he and my mom still live in their own apartment, on the 9th floor, in Cherry Creek. They will be celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary a month from now.

I was blessed to have 2 older brothers. Well, when I was young I certainly didn’t consider it much of a blessing! They were always picking on me, from the day my parents brought me home and they named me “Sister Baby” to the day my brother Gary passed away in January. But I was always their “Monkey” “Lil Sis” and “Tiner” (a name Gary gave me in honor of President Kennedy’s Bostonian Accent).  My brother Sheldon is now a retired attorney who is playing golf for a living (we’ll see how long that lasts!). He and his wife Lucy have raised a son in his own image: strong, powerful, philanthropic.

I have a beautiful daughter and a 4-year old granddaughter whom I hope to see today. Sharing this day with them will make it even more special. I have invited a few of my closest friends and family to brunch in a couple of hours, and it should be fun to get together and schmooze and talk about this year and dreams for the next.  Those of you who were not included in this invitation, please know that I anticipated you might be at church this morning and therefore unavailable to celebrate with me, but please know that I’m thinking about you as I write this.

It’s been quite a year for me. We lost my brother Gary in January and I’m still reeling. My 88 year old mother had knee replacement surgery this summer (they told her it’s a “young person’s surgery”) and she’s recovered so well they have released her from PT. The flower shop is thriving (thank you, Pamela) and the gift basket business is having a great holiday season.  We spent a few months enjoying the fiasco of a presidential election that will difficult to forget. I rescued a new puppy who has destroyed the carpeting in my living room (I will be replacing the flooring soon). I have been volunteering my singing voice in the choirs at Temple Beth El in Sun City and  the North Phoenix Baptist Church. I am crocheting plastic blankets for homeless Vets and trying to keep the businesses current on Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest while Pamela keeps me apprised of current events that she reads all over the Internet.

My mother always says Next Year will be a better one. I hope and pray she’s right for all of us. May this season bring you light. May you be blessed with health and happiness. May my birthday be the beginning of a new year filled with joy, blessings and peace.

Happy Birthday to me!

OMG!! Cinco De Mayo Story

Southwest gift basket

OMG! Cinco De Mayo Story!

Remember I told you there are 3 holidays happening right now?  Well, here’s a great story about the second one!!  Actually, it’s tongue and cheek, and I hope you’ll enjoy it!
Most people don’t know that back in 1912, Hellmann’s Mayonnaise (known as Best Foods on the West Coast) was manufactured in England. In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after its stop in New York. This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise ever delivered to Mexico. But as we know. the great ship did not make it to New York. The ship hit an iceberg and sank. and the cargo was forever lost. The people of Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise, and were eagerly awaiting its delivery. were disconsolate at the loss. Their anguish was so great, that they declared a National Day of Mourning which they still observe to this day:
The National Day of Mourning occurs each year on May 5th, and is
known of course as, Sinko de Mayo!
I just couldn’t resist, and I thank my friend Kenny Knaster for sending this to me!
Cinco de Mayo—or the fifth of May—commemorates the Mexican army’s 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War (1861-1867). We refer to it as Mexican Independence Day, and in Phoenix it’s a great day of celebration and parties.
Never mind that this year it happens to be 3 days before Mother’s Day and 5 days before Mexican Mother’s Day!
We love love love to celebrate holidays!
Here are a couple options for you! Fresh flowers (of course) and southwest gift baskets!

For many years I lived next door to a great doctor. I noticed that when he wasn’t working at his office he was at home studying and reading. I think we forget that medicine evolves and our doctors have to continuously keep up with their education, the diseases, treatments and medicines.

We sometimes forget how important our doctor is. He’s always here for us, and he knows what’s best for us. But sometimes we forget to thank her and tell her how much we appreciate all of the time, work, education and dedication.

Wednesday, March 30, 2016 is set aside as a day to say Thank You.  If your doctor is helpful in any way, for you or you family, let us design and deliver a Thank You Thought from you.

You’ll be a hero, and there’s nothing wrong with that!

Choose from our large selection of goodie baskets from Basket Express or sensational fresh flowers from Roadrunner Florist.  You’ll be glad you did!
