Father’s Day June 17

Father’s Day June 17

Father’s Day 2018 is June 17.

I’m fortunate to have visited my 95 year old dad this past week. He and my 90 year old mom are living at a Brookdale in Denver, and they’re doing amazingly well for people their age!

Dad

For Father’s Day this year I sent him some new shirts, some fresh FRUIT WITH FLOWERS! What are you going to do for Dear old Dad?  How about FRUIT AND COOKIES!

Farmer's Market  Pedestal Fruit

I wondered about the history of Father’s Day, so, in the words of my daughter Lauren, I Googled it! Here’s what it says:

Father’s Day is coming up, so in honor of dear old dad, the Art of Manliness is presenting a series of father-themed posts. Today we look into the history of Father’s Day. Sadly, retailers and marketers, in an effort to make a quick buck, have bastardized the original meaning of Father’s Day. A holiday that was supposed to honor dad and enumerate his special qualities, now is used to sell chili pepper ties and shop vacs. Hopefully by understanding why the concept of Father’s Day was created, we can better celebrate and honor the fathers who raised us into men.

The History of Father’s Day in the United States

There are two stories of when the first Father’s Day was celebrated. According to some accounts, the first Father’s Day was celebrated in Washington state on June 19, 1910. A woman by the name of Sonora Smart Dodd came up with the idea of honoring and celebrating her father while listening to a Mother’s Day sermon at church in 1909. She felt as though mothers were getting all the acclaim while fathers were equally deserving of a day of praise (She would probably be displeased that Mother’s Day still gets the lion’s share of attention).

Sonora’s dad was quite a man. William Smart, a veteran of the Civil War, was left a widower when his wife died while giving birth to their sixth child. He went on to raise the six children by himself on their small farm in Washington. To show her appreciation for all the hard work and love William gave to her and her siblings, Sonora thought there should be a day to pay homage to him and other dads like him. She initially suggested June 5th, the anniversary of her father’s death to be the designated day to celebrate Father’s Day, but due to some bad planning, the celebration in Spokane, Washington was deferred to the third Sunday in June.

The other story of the first Father’s Day in America happened all the way on the other side of the country in Fairmont, West Virginia on July 5, 1908. Grace Golden Clayton suggested to the minister of the local Methodist church that they hold services to celebrate fathers after a deadly mine explosion killed 361 men.

While Father’s Day was celebrated locally in several communities across the country, unofficial support to make the celebration a national holiday began almost immediately. William Jennings Bryant was one of its staunchest proponents. In 1924, President Calvin “Silent Cal” Coolidge recommended that Father’s Day become a national holiday. But no official action was taken.

In 1966, Lyndon B. Johnson, through an executive order, designated the third Sunday in June as the official day to celebrate Father’s Day. However, it wasn’t until 1972, during the Nixon administration, that Father’s Day was officially recognized as a national holiday.

If you are fortunate enough to still have your dad, remember him on this special day with a gift from Roadrunner Florist and Basket Express.  If you dad is no longer with us, may his memory be a blessing.

Safety and Efficiency: Tools and Resources for Disabled Parents

Safety and Efficiency: Tools and Resources for Disabled Parents

I was contacted by Ashley Taylor of Disabledparents.org and she asked if she could write an article for my Blog. It didn’t take me more than a moment to be both honored and humbled by her request and interest in Basket Express.

Her story is one of strength and courage. This is the request that she sent to me.

My husband and I both have disabilities. We’ve always wanted children, and knew that because of our disabilities becoming parents and parenthood, in general, would require extra planning and prep. From the get-go we started saving for IVF treatments and making modifications to our home that would make us and our future children safer. Along the way, we’ve picked up a lot of great resources on planning and preparing for parenthood as parents with disabilities and we’ve learned some valuable lessons, too.
Can I write an article for your website with advice for people with disabilities on how they can prepare their lives and their homes for parenthood? Today, my husband and I have two amazing kids, and I thought this might be a good way to show my gratitude to the universe for all the ways we’ve been blessed.
Imagine how I felt when I read this story, and the shivers that went up my spine when she sent me this information, which I gladly share with you today.
Disabilities

The days when disabled people were considered unfit to be parents are behind us thanks to the efforts of organizations like Through the Looking Glass, a resource that provides training and services for the disabled. Their advocacy, and that of others, has made it easier for the disabled to find products that help them care for their children effectively and efficiently. Many have been forced to use their creativity and ingenuity, devising new, more convenient ways to breastfeed, change diapers, and bathe their children. Performing these tasks is a lot easier with tools that can help save time and allow parents to multitask, an important capability for any parent. Fortunately, there are many products with designs and features that can make it easier to care for your child, both independently and safely. (Also remember that any modifications you make to your home, such as an entrance wheelchair ramp or widened doorways, may be a great help to subsequent owners.)

Wheelchair ramps can be works of art! Check out these pictures of home that have used their ramps to accent their flowers!

Accessible sleep space

This has long been a major hurdle for disabled parents. The traditional baby crib configuration is incompatible for most disabled parents, especially those who are in a wheelchair and can’t reach into the sleeping space. The Cocoonababy is a soft, cushioned platform with no sides or attachments. Your baby is safely secured with an adjustable strap that can be removed quickly for diaper changes. The Cocoonababy is light and easy to carry as you move around the house. For parents who prefer the conventional design, a side-opening crib allows parents to reach directly inside.

(I don’t know about you, but I had no idea this existed, let alone how important it would be for parents with disabilities.  The baby looks so comfy, and I can understand how easy it would be to use this great bed! )

Breastfeed with ease

Finding a comfortable breastfeeding position is a subjective thing for moms. Some prefer to breastfeed while lying in bed without having to move their child around. An adaptive cot with one open side can be wheeled up to the side of your bed, allowing you to lie on your side while feeding and keep your baby safely next to you while you sleep. It’s an ideal multitasking product – you can breastfeed, burp and put your baby to sleep all without having to change location. If you prefer a more mobile solution, the Breastfeeding Sling lets you feed your child anywhere. Its padded shoulder strap allows you to feed for as long as you need without getting tired.

(Don’t forget the privacy involved with breastfeeding, not only for the baby but for the mom as well.  As an able-bodied mom, I remember the issues I had breastfeeding Lauren. I imagine these are magnified 10-fold for a disabled mom.)
Convenient potty training

Potty training time can be a real challenge for disabled parents. If your mobility is limited, it’s difficult to be as encouraging and physically supportive as you’d like. Many training aids are heavy and difficult to move or lift with ease. The Disney Baby Winnie the Pooh Training Seat is lightweight and clips easily and securely to the top of your toilet seat. It’s also an excellent option if you need to move it between bathrooms.

(Oh, my, the joys of potty training! Just when you think it’s mastered, the “fun” can start all over again!  I guess the best part is this takes a short period of time and then it’s forever!)

Bath time

This is one of the most challenging tasks that disabled parents face. The inflatable Bambino Duck Bath is a light and convenient alternative for parents with limited reach. It can be placed on a low table to take the strain off your back when lifting or stretching. The soft sides can be pushed down easily for improved access.

(It was difficult enough for me, at 5’2″, to bathe Lauren in the sink or tub.  Somehow we manage. Imagine having to “manage” on a daily basis when you are disabled. It’s a good thing these kids are so resilient!)

IVF

In-vitro fertilization is a proven successful alternative for couples having trouble conceiving, but it can be a pricey proposition, with couples paying an average of $19,000. You can defray some of the cost by using your Flexible Spending Account or Health Savings Plan. Shared risk or IVF refund programs can also help you prepare for the financial burden. As expensive as it can be, IVF has been changing lives for the better for decades. According to Qunomedical, “The success and availability of in-vitro fertilization have given hope to many infertile couples who have not been able to conceive. Since 1978, 5.4 million babies have been born worldwide with the help of IVF.”

Ergonomic efficiency

Thinking in terms of your physical challenges can help you identify tools that will make it easier to provide care. There are products and resources that make bathing, feeding and dressing your little one much easier. Remember that the best products are those that provide ergonomic efficiency.

Self-care

As important as your daily activities and amenities are to your parenting abilities, the way you care for yourself also plays a part. A warm bath each evening, a chapter of a good book while your baby naps, or a moment of quiet with a warm cup of coffee in the mornings can all enhance your mental health. And there are plenty of ways your friends and family can encourage you to focus on self-care. A gift basket with your favorite things, a bouquet of fragrant flowers to brighten up the room, or even just a friendly phone conversation and well wishes are all great gift ideas for new moms. With Mother’s Day around the corner, it’s never too early to drop a few hints…

There are products and resources that make bathing, feeding, and dressing your little one much easier. Remember that the best products are those that provide ergonomic efficiency and make life a little more comfortable for your entire family.

No matter the road you took to become a parent, it was and will continue to be an exciting journey. As a disabled parent you will face obstacles and have to make some modifications to your home and life, but at the end of the day you are a parent just like everyone else. Welcome to the ride!

Who’d a Thunk it?

Who’d a Thunk it?

Have you been in any retail store lately? Your neighborhood grocery store, a big box store, anything? Who’d a thunk you’d see Christmas in October? One of our local news stations asked people if they thought it’s just TOO DARN EARLY to see Christmas items in the store, and more than 78% of the people said Yes! And I’ll admit, we totally agree! But there it is, big as day, staring you in the face, asking that you BUY BUY BUY now now now before they run out (as if they’re going to run out) of inventory!

Trees in Walmart

Kinda makes me wonder.  I wonder if we’re really thinking about Christmas!

Nah, can’t possibly be!

(Of course those of us who craft start making our Christmas gifts for next year January, but we’re the exception to the rule!)

Most of us are going to wait until November, or even December, before we start making our lists and checking them twice!

If we wait, then we get to enjoy Halloween and Thanksgiving! Those are 2 great holidays that seem to disappear more and more each year. Sure, you see lots of candy and the frozen turkeys are starting to appear, but are you really enjoying Halloween and are you honestly thankful on the one-day-of-the-year-set-aside-to-say-THANKS?

Halloween Gift Basket

So, then, you’re wondering why I’m writing to ask if you’d even begin to think about Christmas! I dare say, YES!

The inventory at Roadrunner Florist and Basket Express is arriving fresh daily. We have limited supplies of delicious cookies, cakes, pies and pates. We are ordering our fresh fruit by the bushel, both organic and non. We have ordered our Christmas Greens (I can hardly wait for them to come into the shop because they smell so great!) as well as our holiday flowers! We have containers in various shapes and shades of red, green, silver, gold and white. We are setting out our candles for your centerpieces. We’re lining up our delivery drivers.

It’s quite a season for us, and a busy one, so we’re excited! But who’d a thunk you’d get excited too?

Well, I THUNK SO!! I think you can’t help get excited when you hear the music (Santa Claus is Coming to Town), when you start to think that YOU are Santa Claus and that we’re here to help you!

Our beautiful websites are ready to accept your holiday orders, for Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. www.roadrunnerflorist.com  and www.giftbasketsbytina.com are loaded with ideas, and if you don’t see your favorite, then simply call us and we’ll design unique gifts for you!

I dare say it’s not too early … not too early to Thunk About It!  Happy happy happy holidays!

St. Patrick’s Day 2017

St. Patrick's Day gift basket

St. Patrick’s Day 2017

What does St. Patrick’s Day 2017 mean to you?

St Patrick's Day Facebook cover

I thought I’d give you a little bit of St. Patrick’s Day history before asking what Friday the 17th is going to mean for you!  OMG, there’s so much information on Google that I hardly know where to start!

St. Patrick was the foremost patron saint of Ireland. In the 17th century the day of his death, March 17, was made an “official Christian feast day” and we’ve carried the tradition of wearin’ the green since then! Like so many holidays that began in with a religious tradition, in recent years, there has been criticism of Saint Patrick’s Day celebrations for having become too commercialized and for fostering negative stereotypes of the Irish. There’s quite a bit of history about him which you might find interesting at History of Saint Patrick.

Do you remember spending an afternoon in the sun looking for a 4-leaf clover (I did that in the grass in front of my house in Denver as a young girl…gee I still do it today as a not-so-young-girl!). After all,  what could be more lucky that a green shamrock?

Our customers help us celebrate by ordering gift baskets and flowers and plants for this fun day.

Here’s a picture of one of the gift baskets that I had the pleasure to design this year. Looks lucky doesn’t it?

Spring Forward, Fall Back! CORRECTION

Fall Gift Basket

Spring Forward, Fall Back!

Correction!! Blame it on Godaddy!!  They said the site wasn’t secure! But it is!! So go ahead and click and enjoy!!

We’ve all heard it: Spring forward, fall back! Frankly, it doesn’t mean much in Phoenix, except that we get confused AGAIN about whose time zone we’re sharing! Since we don’t change from Mountain Standard Time, sometimes we share with California and sometimes we share with Colorado. No matter what, we’re confused for about 6 months, and then once we figure it out, it changes and we get confused all over again!

No, we’re not jumping the gun! I Googled it and learned Daylight Savings Time doesn’t end until November 6th. That’s really late for us to talk about autumn, because by that time we’re getting ready for Christmas!

OMG, Christmas! Yes, that’s when you start thinking about your corporate gift baskets! How many will you need this  year? Do you have your list?

And what about the people in your life? Like your dentist and doctor, accountant and lawyer. How about a gift basket for that special waitress or hostess at your favorite restaurant?

OK, I’m way ahead of myself. (but not really, because today is a great day to get your list together and get it to me so I can guarantee Christmas delivery of your custom designed gift baskets)!!

Let’s talk about Fall.

Could it be that fall is just around the corner? Even here in the desert, we can feel the change of season. Our imported trees begin to change color (or we can drive just a couple hours north and be a mile high and enjoy the true change of colors). Mornings are absolutely amazing, including the breath of cooler air. Evenings are spectacular, with the earlier sunsets of many colors.

And people seem to get back into the swing of things, including school, Boss’s Day, Thanksgiving and holidays. (oh, my, we’re back to those holidays! See, I’m right…you have to start thinking about gift-giving for the holidays, like for the teacher and the policeman and the mailman and the gardener. Don’t forget about your web designer and IT guy. Maybe I’ll make a list (and check it twice) to make sure  YOU don’t forget anyone!)!

That’s where we come in! We love designing floral arrangements and gift baskets for all! Here’s a goodie gift basket that’s perfect for your fall outing, for Boss’s Day, Thanksgiving or a football party!

Fall Gift Basket  Fall Gift Basket

Maybe you’re inviting people over for a party! Consider a Southwest Basket! Yes, we can ship this beauty across the country in time for your Fiesta (please allow 7 days’ notice).

You can choose the team and I’ll custom design the gift basket! Perfect for your tailgating party, hosting a football game party, or dare I say it, the Super Bowl!

OMG!! Cinco De Mayo Story

Southwest gift basket

OMG! Cinco De Mayo Story!

Remember I told you there are 3 holidays happening right now?  Well, here’s a great story about the second one!!  Actually, it’s tongue and cheek, and I hope you’ll enjoy it!
Most people don’t know that back in 1912, Hellmann’s Mayonnaise (known as Best Foods on the West Coast) was manufactured in England. In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after its stop in New York. This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise ever delivered to Mexico. But as we know. the great ship did not make it to New York. The ship hit an iceberg and sank. and the cargo was forever lost. The people of Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise, and were eagerly awaiting its delivery. were disconsolate at the loss. Their anguish was so great, that they declared a National Day of Mourning which they still observe to this day:
The National Day of Mourning occurs each year on May 5th, and is
known of course as, Sinko de Mayo!
I just couldn’t resist, and I thank my friend Kenny Knaster for sending this to me!
Cinco de Mayo—or the fifth of May—commemorates the Mexican army’s 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War (1861-1867). We refer to it as Mexican Independence Day, and in Phoenix it’s a great day of celebration and parties.
Never mind that this year it happens to be 3 days before Mother’s Day and 5 days before Mexican Mother’s Day!
We love love love to celebrate holidays!

Phoenix: Fun in the Sun

Phoenix Fun in the Sun

Phoenix: Fun in the Sun

We Phoenix desert dwellers wish we had an ocean to enjoy. So we drive a few hours to the beach in San Diego for fun in the (cooler) sun. If we choose to stay here, then we enjoy our swimming pools and water parks beginning the first of April through October.

I thought I’d share with you a fun gift basket I just designed that’s perfect for our Phoenix sun or for a trip to the beach. I know, I know, I don’t usually blatantly tell you about gift baskets, but this one is so much fun that I thought I’d make an exception!

Our Phoenix Fun in the Sun Gift Basket is a great way to party!

We’ll take a bucket (perfect for the beach or to play with in the pool) and stuff it with a festive and colorful beach towel. Then we’ll add sunscreen (ok, here’s your lecture for the day: You MUST wear sunscreen. Here’s some information from the American Academy of Dermatology about wearing sunscreen.)

Next we’ll add coffee and snacks, because what trip to the beach (or the pool) is complete without a handful of goodies for munching?

For the Pièce de résistance we’ll add a water gun!  What could be more fun than that?

Now you have the prefect Fun in the Sun basket for you, your family and friends. (there is nothing wrong with ordering one for yourself, and then you can decided if you want to share it or not!!).

Do you know someone who is coming to Phoenix to visit? It’s a perfect gift waiting for them at their hotel or in your guest bedroom!

Having a party for a bunch of friends! Maybe an event at your office, like a training session or open house!  It’s a great door prize?

You won’t be disappointed when you send (or receive) our Phoenix Fun in the Sun Gift Basket! You can order yours now!  Phoenix Fun In the Sun
