Healthier Gift Baskets

Is there such a thing as Healthier Gift Baskets? If there is, then Basket Express is the place to find them! Do we really design gift baskets with foods that are healthier than ice cream?  Well, SURE!   We can certainly design a gift basket with 9 Mood-blasting Foods that are healthier than your go-to pint of ice cream!

Can you guess which one is the 10th one?

Experts like YourTango health expert Lisa Petsinis tell us ice cream may sound like a good choice when you’re feeling down or stressed, the truth is: If you really want a mood-boost from food, there are smarter ways to get it.

By eating “happy foods” that involve the right nutrients and neurotransmitters — such as serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine — you actually can eat your way to happiness.

Here is her list of the 10 Mood-boosing foods:

1. Nuts

Nuts are nutrient-dense, often containing high amounts of magnesium, selenium, and folate. Some nuts contain the amino acid tyrosine, which contributes to the creation of the neurotransmitter dopamine that activates your pleasure system. Bring on life’s challenges!

Eat just a few brazil nuts a day, and you’ll meet your requirements. Alternatively, make up a bag of trail mix of nuts, cherries and dark chocolate with even more good stuff and nibble your way to glee.

Yes, Basket Express can design a gift baskets full of healthy nuts!

We call this our Oh, Nuts Gift Basket

Oh, nuts

and this is our Nut Man Basket! Both are great choices for Nuts!

Nut Basket

2. Bananas

Another quick way to boost your mood is to grab a banana. In addition to its yellow cheeriness, a banana is loaded with vitamins and minerals such as magnesium, potassium, zinc, B6 and vitamin C.

Bananas are full of tryptophan, too. If you’re having trouble sleeping, try making banana tea and ease your way into a slumber.

Most of the fresh fruit basket from Basket Express

include bananas.

They are a staple in my life, and should be a staple for you, too!

Here’s our Holiday Fresh Fruit Basket

Perfect for Christmas, 2018

This is our Fresh Season Fruit plus Nuts Basket.

Talk about putting great things together in one gift basket!

Fresh fruit and nuts

3. Oatmeal

Oatmeal tops the list for power breakfasts because it contains complex carbohydrates that increase the absorption of serotonin, plus iron, B6, magnesium, and chromium.

To start your day off right, trying to have a bowl topped with banana slices and nuts for added benefit. This meal will stabilize your sugar levels and raise dopamine. You’ll be full longer, and your mood will be on an even keel. Oatmeal is especially helpful if you’re prone to mood swings (hint: eat some after you’ve indulged in a pint of ice cream to recover).

I LOVE Oatmeal!!  You can tell it’s winter (well cooler!) when I start eating Oatmeal for breakfast every day! I even like the Steel Oats (when I get it at a restaurant ’cause I haven’t figured out a way to make it at home … hint hint!).

If you’d like Oatmeal added to any of your gift baskets

from Basket Express, just let us know!

Oatmeal

4. Fish

Fatty fish is full of omega-3 fatty acids, as well as vitamins D, B6, and B12. The omegas in particular release dopamine that some say similar to having sex. If you want to feel good tonight, try cooking a salmon steak or be adventurous and try some Portuguese mackerel.

We are happy to add Salmon to any gift basket!

Our preference is this the World Market® Classic Smoked Alaskan Salmon which is prepared with precision to bring out a medley of irresistible flavors. Caught wild in the icy, pristine waters of Alaska, each fillet is selected with care and slowly cured in savory brine before being lightly smoked over native Alaskan Alder wood. The result? A truly remarkable taste experience. And because it can be stored at room temperature or below, it can be enjoyed any time, anywhere!

Here’s our Send ’em Gourmet and More gift Basket. It’s loaded with everything you can think of, including crackers, cheese and salmon!

5. Lamb

While the sound of a juicy steak might make your mouth water, you’ll get even more of a mood lift from a leg of lamb. The source of iron is ideal, more easily absorbed by the body than other red meat. Grass-fed lamb is super rich in zinc, B6, B12, and magnesium, too.

It also contains conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), which counteracts the effects of the stress hormone cortisol. If you want lamb, I suggest you find it at the grocery store!

6. Greek Yogurt

Mimic the taste and sensation of eating ice cream by enjoying a cup of Greek yogurt. Available in many flavors, this wonder food contains calcium, protein, CLA, and of course, the star, probiotics. Make it a daily treat, and you’ll notice a difference in your gut and your mood.

Fermented foods such as kimchi and kefir are natural probiotics, too. Add a spoonful of sauerkraut to your meals and see how you feel!

Seems to me, if you’re going to add Yogurt to a gift basket, then you want to add cheese and crackers! Maybe some nuts, fresh fruit and other healthy goodies! How about some veggies!

Here is our Top of the Line Veggie Basket!

We could add Greek Yogurt to these for you!

7. Spinach

This leafy green is high in zinc, magnesium, folate and other B vitamins, which makes it your ideal go-to in the fridge. Saute it, add it to an omelet or soup, or give it the starring role in a salad. Toss in some mushrooms to give yourself a vitamin D boost at the same time.

I see Spinach in our Veggie Baskets!

Vegies Basket

8. Fresh Cherries

Life is a bowl of cherries! And you will feel that way after you devour a dish of these delicious treats. Containing a variety of vitamins and minerals, cherries are also said to improve headaches and boost your libido.

Red tart cherries are well known for their melatonin content. Have a few or sip some pure juice an hour before bed and you’ll be whisked off to dreamland. That is one definite way to wake up happy.

During the season, we love adding red cherries to our

gift baskets. They’re a very special treat!

9. Espresso

If your head is spinning over whether coffee is good for you, you’re not alone. Anything in excess is probably bad for you. That said, an occasional or even daily dose of espresso might just do the trick.

A  Harvard study found that drinking coffee was related to 50 percent fewer suicides. The proposed reason is that coffee aids in the production of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine. Coffee is packed with antioxidants that prevent cell damage and essential nutrients such as B2, B3, B5, manganese, and potassium. Some say the smell of coffee alone can reduce your stress!

Too much caffeine might make you jumpy, though — not the effect you are going for when you want to ease your anxiety. And take heed of this warning: drinking coffee on an empty stomach can spike your cortisol and keep you spinning throughout the day.

To counter all of that, what you need is a smaller dose of caffeine. Despite popular belief, a shot of espresso has less caffeine than a cup of brewed coffee

If you’re new to espresso (and I don’t mean the Starbucks variety), learn how to drink espresso like a true Italian. Imagine yourself in a bar in Venice, drink it back, and you’ll be sure to smile.

Each of our healthy gift baskets can include espresso.

We can substitute Coffee with espresso!

That’s why we’re unique and your gift baskets are, too!

Here is our Fresh Fruit Coffee Gift Basket!

Fresh Fruit Coffee gift Basket

And adding lots of healthy things together,

here is our Coffee and Nuts gift basket.

Coffee and Nuts

10. Dark Chocolate

Be prepared: always keep a dark chocolate bar on hand. Though you might want to indulge in the entire bar, only one or two squares will do. Eat the square mindfully, savoring each bite. It will taste so fantastic that you won’t even realize what you’re eating contains antioxidants, fiber, magnesium, copper, iron, selenium, and zinc.

For maximum happiness, go for organic fair-trade chocolate. And why not combine number 8 and 10 and dip your cherries into melted chocolate? Divine!

While a pint of cookie dough ice cream may be very tempting when you’re down in the dumps, trying these mood-enhancing foods will be better for you in the long run. Lift your spirits and build healthy habits at the same time.

I have a great story to share with you.  My mother, my sister-in-law and I were walking in a mall in Denver a few years ago. One of the chocolate stores had samples (how wonderful!) on their counter, and we each took a piece.Lucy took milk chocolate and my mother and I took DARK chocolate. We didn’t even notice that our favorite was dark until Lucy called it to our attention! I don’t think it was the healthy alternative for us, but I do think it was the tasty alternative for us!

It’s a Chocolate Christmas can be all dark chocolate if you prefer!

Father’s Day June 17

Father’s Day June 17

Father’s Day 2018 is June 17.

I’m fortunate to have visited my 95 year old dad this past week. He and my 90 year old mom are living at a Brookdale in Denver, and they’re doing amazingly well for people their age!

Dad

For Father’s Day this year I sent him some new shirts, some fresh FRUIT WITH FLOWERS! What are you going to do for Dear old Dad?  How about FRUIT AND COOKIES!

Farmer's Market  Pedestal Fruit

I wondered about the history of Father’s Day, so, in the words of my daughter Lauren, I Googled it! Here’s what it says:

Father’s Day is coming up, so in honor of dear old dad, the Art of Manliness is presenting a series of father-themed posts. Today we look into the history of Father’s Day. Sadly, retailers and marketers, in an effort to make a quick buck, have bastardized the original meaning of Father’s Day. A holiday that was supposed to honor dad and enumerate his special qualities, now is used to sell chili pepper ties and shop vacs. Hopefully by understanding why the concept of Father’s Day was created, we can better celebrate and honor the fathers who raised us into men.

The History of Father’s Day in the United States

There are two stories of when the first Father’s Day was celebrated. According to some accounts, the first Father’s Day was celebrated in Washington state on June 19, 1910. A woman by the name of Sonora Smart Dodd came up with the idea of honoring and celebrating her father while listening to a Mother’s Day sermon at church in 1909. She felt as though mothers were getting all the acclaim while fathers were equally deserving of a day of praise (She would probably be displeased that Mother’s Day still gets the lion’s share of attention).

Sonora’s dad was quite a man. William Smart, a veteran of the Civil War, was left a widower when his wife died while giving birth to their sixth child. He went on to raise the six children by himself on their small farm in Washington. To show her appreciation for all the hard work and love William gave to her and her siblings, Sonora thought there should be a day to pay homage to him and other dads like him. She initially suggested June 5th, the anniversary of her father’s death to be the designated day to celebrate Father’s Day, but due to some bad planning, the celebration in Spokane, Washington was deferred to the third Sunday in June.

The other story of the first Father’s Day in America happened all the way on the other side of the country in Fairmont, West Virginia on July 5, 1908. Grace Golden Clayton suggested to the minister of the local Methodist church that they hold services to celebrate fathers after a deadly mine explosion killed 361 men.

While Father’s Day was celebrated locally in several communities across the country, unofficial support to make the celebration a national holiday began almost immediately. William Jennings Bryant was one of its staunchest proponents. In 1924, President Calvin “Silent Cal” Coolidge recommended that Father’s Day become a national holiday. But no official action was taken.

In 1966, Lyndon B. Johnson, through an executive order, designated the third Sunday in June as the official day to celebrate Father’s Day. However, it wasn’t until 1972, during the Nixon administration, that Father’s Day was officially recognized as a national holiday.

If you are fortunate enough to still have your dad, remember him on this special day with a gift from Roadrunner Florist and Basket Express.  If you dad is no longer with us, may his memory be a blessing.

Safety and Efficiency: Tools and Resources for Disabled Parents

Safety and Efficiency: Tools and Resources for Disabled Parents

I was contacted by Ashley Taylor of Disabledparents.org and she asked if she could write an article for my Blog. It didn’t take me more than a moment to be both honored and humbled by her request and interest in Basket Express.

Her story is one of strength and courage. This is the request that she sent to me.

My husband and I both have disabilities. We’ve always wanted children, and knew that because of our disabilities becoming parents and parenthood, in general, would require extra planning and prep. From the get-go we started saving for IVF treatments and making modifications to our home that would make us and our future children safer. Along the way, we’ve picked up a lot of great resources on planning and preparing for parenthood as parents with disabilities and we’ve learned some valuable lessons, too.
Can I write an article for your website with advice for people with disabilities on how they can prepare their lives and their homes for parenthood? Today, my husband and I have two amazing kids, and I thought this might be a good way to show my gratitude to the universe for all the ways we’ve been blessed.
Imagine how I felt when I read this story, and the shivers that went up my spine when she sent me this information, which I gladly share with you today.
Disabilities

The days when disabled people were considered unfit to be parents are behind us thanks to the efforts of organizations like Through the Looking Glass, a resource that provides training and services for the disabled. Their advocacy, and that of others, has made it easier for the disabled to find products that help them care for their children effectively and efficiently. Many have been forced to use their creativity and ingenuity, devising new, more convenient ways to breastfeed, change diapers, and bathe their children. Performing these tasks is a lot easier with tools that can help save time and allow parents to multitask, an important capability for any parent. Fortunately, there are many products with designs and features that can make it easier to care for your child, both independently and safely. (Also remember that any modifications you make to your home, such as an entrance wheelchair ramp or widened doorways, may be a great help to subsequent owners.)

Wheelchair ramps can be works of art! Check out these pictures of home that have used their ramps to accent their flowers!

Accessible sleep space

This has long been a major hurdle for disabled parents. The traditional baby crib configuration is incompatible for most disabled parents, especially those who are in a wheelchair and can’t reach into the sleeping space. The Cocoonababy is a soft, cushioned platform with no sides or attachments. Your baby is safely secured with an adjustable strap that can be removed quickly for diaper changes. The Cocoonababy is light and easy to carry as you move around the house. For parents who prefer the conventional design, a side-opening crib allows parents to reach directly inside.

(I don’t know about you, but I had no idea this existed, let alone how important it would be for parents with disabilities.  The baby looks so comfy, and I can understand how easy it would be to use this great bed! )

Breastfeed with ease

Finding a comfortable breastfeeding position is a subjective thing for moms. Some prefer to breastfeed while lying in bed without having to move their child around. An adaptive cot with one open side can be wheeled up to the side of your bed, allowing you to lie on your side while feeding and keep your baby safely next to you while you sleep. It’s an ideal multitasking product – you can breastfeed, burp and put your baby to sleep all without having to change location. If you prefer a more mobile solution, the Breastfeeding Sling lets you feed your child anywhere. Its padded shoulder strap allows you to feed for as long as you need without getting tired.

(Don’t forget the privacy involved with breastfeeding, not only for the baby but for the mom as well.  As an able-bodied mom, I remember the issues I had breastfeeding Lauren. I imagine these are magnified 10-fold for a disabled mom.)
Convenient potty training

Potty training time can be a real challenge for disabled parents. If your mobility is limited, it’s difficult to be as encouraging and physically supportive as you’d like. Many training aids are heavy and difficult to move or lift with ease. The Disney Baby Winnie the Pooh Training Seat is lightweight and clips easily and securely to the top of your toilet seat. It’s also an excellent option if you need to move it between bathrooms.

(Oh, my, the joys of potty training! Just when you think it’s mastered, the “fun” can start all over again!  I guess the best part is this takes a short period of time and then it’s forever!)

Bath time

This is one of the most challenging tasks that disabled parents face. The inflatable Bambino Duck Bath is a light and convenient alternative for parents with limited reach. It can be placed on a low table to take the strain off your back when lifting or stretching. The soft sides can be pushed down easily for improved access.

(It was difficult enough for me, at 5’2″, to bathe Lauren in the sink or tub.  Somehow we manage. Imagine having to “manage” on a daily basis when you are disabled. It’s a good thing these kids are so resilient!)

IVF

In-vitro fertilization is a proven successful alternative for couples having trouble conceiving, but it can be a pricey proposition, with couples paying an average of $19,000. You can defray some of the cost by using your Flexible Spending Account or Health Savings Plan. Shared risk or IVF refund programs can also help you prepare for the financial burden. As expensive as it can be, IVF has been changing lives for the better for decades. According to Qunomedical, “The success and availability of in-vitro fertilization have given hope to many infertile couples who have not been able to conceive. Since 1978, 5.4 million babies have been born worldwide with the help of IVF.”

Ergonomic efficiency

Thinking in terms of your physical challenges can help you identify tools that will make it easier to provide care. There are products and resources that make bathing, feeding and dressing your little one much easier. Remember that the best products are those that provide ergonomic efficiency.

Self-care

As important as your daily activities and amenities are to your parenting abilities, the way you care for yourself also plays a part. A warm bath each evening, a chapter of a good book while your baby naps, or a moment of quiet with a warm cup of coffee in the mornings can all enhance your mental health. And there are plenty of ways your friends and family can encourage you to focus on self-care. A gift basket with your favorite things, a bouquet of fragrant flowers to brighten up the room, or even just a friendly phone conversation and well wishes are all great gift ideas for new moms. With Mother’s Day around the corner, it’s never too early to drop a few hints…

There are products and resources that make bathing, feeding, and dressing your little one much easier. Remember that the best products are those that provide ergonomic efficiency and make life a little more comfortable for your entire family.

No matter the road you took to become a parent, it was and will continue to be an exciting journey. As a disabled parent you will face obstacles and have to make some modifications to your home and life, but at the end of the day you are a parent just like everyone else. Welcome to the ride!

Who’d a Thunk it?

Who’d a Thunk it?

Have you been in any retail store lately? Your neighborhood grocery store, a big box store, anything? Who’d a thunk you’d see Christmas in October? One of our local news stations asked people if they thought it’s just TOO DARN EARLY to see Christmas items in the store, and more than 78% of the people said Yes! And I’ll admit, we totally agree! But there it is, big as day, staring you in the face, asking that you BUY BUY BUY now now now before they run out (as if they’re going to run out) of inventory!

Trees in Walmart

Kinda makes me wonder.  I wonder if we’re really thinking about Christmas!

Nah, can’t possibly be!

(Of course those of us who craft start making our Christmas gifts for next year January, but we’re the exception to the rule!)

Most of us are going to wait until November, or even December, before we start making our lists and checking them twice!

If we wait, then we get to enjoy Halloween and Thanksgiving! Those are 2 great holidays that seem to disappear more and more each year. Sure, you see lots of candy and the frozen turkeys are starting to appear, but are you really enjoying Halloween and are you honestly thankful on the one-day-of-the-year-set-aside-to-say-THANKS?

So, then, you’re wondering why I’m writing to ask if you’d even begin to think about Christmas! I dare say, YES!

The inventory at Roadrunner Florist and Basket Express is arriving fresh daily. We have limited supplies of delicious cookies, cakes, pies and pates. We are ordering our fresh fruit by the bushel, both organic and non. We have ordered our Christmas Greens (I can hardly wait for them to come into the shop because they smell so great!) as well as our holiday flowers! We have containers in various shapes and shades of red, green, silver, gold and white. We are setting out our candles for your centerpieces. We’re lining up our delivery drivers.

It’s quite a season for us, and a busy one, so we’re excited! But who’d a thunk you’d get excited too?

Well, I THUNK SO!! I think you can’t help get excited when you hear the music (Santa Claus is Coming to Town), when you start to think that YOU are Santa Claus and that we’re here to help you!

Our beautiful websites are ready to accept your holiday orders, for Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. www.roadrunnerflorist.com  and www.giftbasketsbytina.com are loaded with ideas, and if you don’t see your favorite, then simply call us and we’ll design unique gifts for you!

I dare say it’s not too early … not too early to Thunk About It!  Happy happy happy holidays!

ASU

ASU

Phoenix is home to every major sports team as well as the ASU Sun Devils and Dare-I-Say The UofA Wildcats!

Boy, it’s a long list.

We are the exclusive gift basket sponsor of the Arizona State University Sun Devils.

The University of Arizona now has a large presence of medical centers in Phoenix.

Just north of us in Flagstaff is Northern Arizona University.
ASU-Arizona State University    UofA Wildcats    NAU

We custom design gift baskets for each and every college and university.

All of that said, there are the Major and Minor Professional Teams, too!

The Arizona Diamondbacks, The Phoenix Suns, The Phoenix Mercury, The Phoenix Coyotes, The Arizona Cardinals, The Arizona Rattlers, The Arizona Assassins, The Arizona Scorpions and The Phoenix Rising.

I got a kick out of this information from Wikipedia. It’s the name of the team, the sport, the league, the venue, the year formed and the number of championships earned!

Arizona Cardinals Football National Football League University of Phoenix Stadium 1898* 2*
Arizona Coyotes Ice hockey National Hockey League Gila River Arena 1972** 0
Arizona Diamondbacks Baseball Major League Baseball Chase Field 1998 1
Phoenix Mercury Women’s Basketball Women’s National Basketball Association Talking Stick Resort Arena 1997 3
Phoenix Suns Men’s Basketball National Basketball Association Talking Stick Resort Arena 1968 0

(*)Note: The Cardinals moved to Phoenix in 1988, and both championships were won prior to that move. (**)Note: The Coyotes moved to Phoenix in 1996.

When you choose a custom designed gift basket from Basket Express, you choose the team and we’ll work our magic. Yes, you can choose a team from another place, i..e., Pamela’s Alma Mater MSU or Tina’s Team the Denver Broncos.

When you place your order, simply put the name of the team on the order form.
